Vacuum Assisted Core Biopsy
Vacuum Assisted Core Biopsy is a type of biopsy
in which a hollow needle is inserted through the skin to the site of an abnormal
growth to collect and remove a significantly larger sample of cells for analysis.
At Union Square Medical Imaging and Mammography, we use the patented technology
of the vacuum assisted VACORA Biopsy System that allows a needle and vacuum to take
samples of tissue without having surgery. Using vacuum pressure, the abnormal cells
and tissue are removed without having to withdraw the probe after each sampling
as in core needle biopsy without vacuum pressure.
What is Ultrasound-Guided Biopsy and
Some Common Uses of the Procedure?
In ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, ultrasound imaging is used to help guide the
radiologist's instruments to the site of the abnormal growth. We utilize state-of-the-art
Ultrasound equipment for the accuracy of our diagnosis. Ultrasound- Guided Biopsies
are most valuable with small, difficult to access nodules that may be partially
cystic, as well as when a breast ultrasound shows an abnormality not seen mammographically
such as:
- a suspicious solid mass
- a distortion in the structure of the breast tissue
- an area of abnormal tissue change
There are two types of ultrasound-guided biopsies -
Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) and Core
biopsy.
How should I prepare for my Core Biopsy?
Prior to the exam, you may eat a light breakfast, but do not drink coffee unless
it is decaffeinated. If you take aspirin or blood thinners, please discontinue using
these three days in advance of the procedure. Avoid using talcum powder or deodorant
on the day of your biopsy.
How is the procedure performed?
You will lie on your back with your arm extended over your head. Our Board Certified
Radiologist will numb an area in your breast with a local anesthetic. Then, the
doctor will make a tiny (4-5mm) skin nick. The VACORA needle will be inserted through
the incision and tissue samples will be removed. A SecurMark™ Biopsy Site
Identifier (clip) will be placed in the area of biopsied structure for future follow-up
or guidance in case of surgery.
There is no need for the stitches. A simple bandage is all you will need. Once the
biopsy is completed, you will be able to resume your normal activities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not necessarily. Approximately 8 of every 10 biopsies are benign and show no cancer.
Our Board Certified Radiologist will do biopsy procedures. Highly trained and qualified
staff will be assisting our doctor.
There will be little or no scaring since the procedures involve small incisions.
Most patients feel little or no pain. You may have some slight bruising and tenderness
following the biopsy. Tylenol is a good to stay free of pain.
You'll need to discuss this with your doctor but in most cases you will not need
a ride home.
Ask your doctor about how long it will take to receive your diagnosis.
We send all biopsy specimens to NYU pathology lab. Our radiologist will analyze
the lab results and send a signed report to your primary care physician or the physician
who referred you for the exam, who will share the results with you. In some cases
the radiologist may discuss results with you.
