Current guidelines from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) recommend screening mammography every year for women, beginning at age 40.

Digital Mammography allows us to observe cancer in women who were previously difficult to diagnose.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. Widespread use of screening, along with treatment advances in recent years, have been credited with significant reductions in breast cancer mortality.

Different Types of Mammograms

Union Square, Manhattan Location

Screening Mammography is used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms. It is done once a year in our Manhattan location.

Diagnostic Mammography is used to evaluate a patient with abnormal clinical findings, such as breast lump, nipple discharge, pain, etc., that have been found by the woman or her doctor. Diagnostic mammography may also be done after an abnormal screening mammography in order to evaluate the area of concern on the screening exam.

Breast Implants

Breast implants can impede accurate mammogram readings because both silicone and saline implants are not transparent on x-rays and can block a clear view of the tissues behind them, especially if the implant has been placed in front of, rather than beneath, the chest muscles. Our technologists at the Union Square, Manhattan location are experienced in performing mammography on patients with breast implants and know how to carefully compress the breasts to improve the view without rupturing the implant.

Biopsy

Union Square, Manhattan Location

Lumps or abnormalities in the breast are often detected by physical examination, mammography, sonography or other imaging studies. However, it is not always possible to tell from these imaging tests whether a growth is benign or cancerous. A breast biopsy is performed to remove some cells—surgically or through a less invasive procedure involving a hollow needle—from a suspicious area in the breast and examine them under a microscope to determine a diagnosis. Image-guided needle biopsy is not designed to remove the entire lesion, but most of a very small lesion may be removed in the process of biopsy. Image-guided biopsy is performed when the abnormal area in the breast is too small to be felt, making it difficult to locate the lesion by hand (called palpation).

Bone Densitometry /DEXA test

Union Square, Manhattan Location

The Bone Density Test, also called densitometry (DEXA) scan, is to determine the mineral density in your bones. It uses special X-rays to measure the amount of calcium in the bones. This determines your actual bone mass. Results can show whether you have osteoporosis, which is preventable, but unfortunately it is a disease that affects 28 million Americans. Women are affected 4 x more frequently than men. The test is painless, quick, non-invasive, and requires no preparation. Scheduling this test allows us to help you plan a full life, one that allows you to enjoy many activities long into your life.
